5. Streptococcus pneumoniae

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a gram positive, alpha-hemolytic, lancet-shaped diplococcus. It replicates in chains when in liquid medium. It is both bile soluble and optochin sensitive. An initial test of any gram-positive organism is a catalase test which is used to differentiate Staphylococcus aureus which is positive from Streptococcus pneumoniae is negative. Colonies may rarely appear mucoid and have umbilicated appearance.
